About Me

My photo
Hi :) my name is Donald Morgan and I am currently in my 3rd year at Texas Lutheran University. My major is Kinesiology and when I graduate I plan to be a high school football or basketball coach. As a future coach I am not just leaning about sports, but I am also learning about childhood obesity and how it is affecting our society into living a more sedentary lifestyle rather than being active. This is what has lead me to writing this childhood obesity blog. As a coach I love sports and love helping kids. This blog is to help parents as well as children understand that being healthy is the best way to live your life. Being healthy can lead to a LONG Life. Don't cut it short because we are unhealthy.

24 Hours is Plenty of Time

When it comes to childhood obesity many people tend to say they never have time to exercise or they don’t have a place where they or their family can work out. I understand all this but let’s just be real with ourselves; we all know these are all EVERYDAY EXCUSES!!! The good thing about this is that I am going to provide you a list of ways in which you can prevent childhood obesity when it comes to eating habits  as well as a list of ANYWHERE ANYTIME WORKOUTS!!!
·         Eat meals  at the table as a family and not in front of a T.V. or laying in your bed
·         Don’t snack before or after meals and make sure your kids don’t sneak junk food at night or between meals.
·         3 healthy meals a day
·         Limit the amount of fried foods you eat
·         Avoid soda or sweetened drinks with lots of sugar
·         Instead of candy feed your kid taste fruits or vegetables
·         Low fat milk, ear organic natural foods because they are healthier than processed foods.
Now some people will try to do these things without exercising lol. Sorry but there is no easy way out of losing weight. If we want our kids and ourselves to be healthy and get rid of childhood obesity we have to eat healthy, but we also have to exercise. IT TAKES TWO; EATING HABITS&EXERCISE.
Here is a list of exercise you can do anywhere or everywhere.
·         Push-ups
·         Sit-ups
·         Crunches
·         Squats
·         Running in place
·         Stair jumps up and down
·         Dancing
·         Jump rope/running/jogging in place
·         Workout Videos
·         If the weather is nice do things outside because it works better. Exercise also will help you relieve stress.
·         Each person is different so reps and repetition varies. Start of low and increase as you fill your body changing and becoming healthier and in shape. Don’t be afraid to push yourself!!! No one knows your body better than you!!!
This gives you and your family plenty of options to make sure that you are exercising and eating healthy everyday. 24 hours is plenty of time to get 30 to 90 minutes of physical activity done. That’s right out of 24 hours all we need to do is make time from 30 to 90 minutes. What’s that??? You ask why 30 to 90 minutes??? The reason is because it is proven by experts and specialist that 30 to 90 minutes a day will help in losing weight and maintaining healthy activity. To be honest I personally try 90 minutes a day, I’m not perfect I do miss some days but I have noticed a difference in what happens when I work out.  I have noticed that if I do nothing I start getting really chubby and if I work out 3 days a week I just maintain and stay the same weight, but when I workout every day I actually do lose weight. So come on people let’s not make any more EXCUSES about not having the time or a place to exercise. (including myself).
The TRUTH is we do have the time and place to exercise. Next time someone ask you why you don’t want to work out just say it’s because “I’m lazy and I don’t want to do it, I can do it but I just don’t.” DON’T MAKE AN EXCUSE. I believe in US, I know it’s hard but we can do it. Lets avoid having to answer that shameful question on why we don’t exercise or why are we obese and like NIKE let’s JUST DO IT!!!  Shoot for the moon (90 min) and if we fall short well land among the stars (30 min) either way we can do it J DEFEAT CHILDHOOD OBESITY even better DEFEAT OBESITY PERIOD. WE CAN DO IT IF WE TRY!!! LET’S DO IT!!!

Childhood Obesity is it Your Fault??? “Blame Game”

Childhood obesity will never be resolved unless we quit playing the blame game. Parents and schools are the two most frequently blamed causes for childhood obesity. Ask yourself is this really the reason that childhood obesity has become a worldwide problem. What about all the other factors that contribute to the childhood obesity like fast food or junk food. These items are placed in front of kids purposely so that kids can then persuade the parents to buy it from them. Are these not major issues that also contribute to childhood obesity or do we just ignore them and continue to blame parents and schools? All blaming does is make the people you’re blaming angry and just adds to the problem. Think about this the more time you waste on blaming others the less time you spend working on a solution. Instead of blaming what we can do is gather information that negatively affect obesity and figure out ways to use it in a positive way.
The national public health guidelines recommend 60 minutes a day for exercise while schools sometime only get 60 minutes a week. This shows that kids are suppose to get 60 minutes a day of exercise, but in reality at school sometimes kids are only getting 60 minutes a week. What we need to do is if we can’t get this changed we need to take a stand when the school board has their opening for the public to attend we need to get as many people as we can to do just that. We need to voice our opinion and show the school board that we are serious about our children being healthy. We shoot for schools to require 60 minutes a day and if that fails lets at least make a compromise. Ask the school for at least 30 minutes a day and if this succeeds it’s up to us parents to make sure our children get the other recommended 30 minutes. This will not solve childhood obesity but just like the President of the U.S. said in his victory speech we are moving forward.
To be honest as parents I do feel we are in some way responsible for childhood obesity as well as schools. The reason is because we are the people who see the kids the majority of the time each and every day. This doesn't mean everything is entirely our fault we are just part of the problem. The good thing is that since we are always blamed then by doing this we are doing our part to help solve the solution. Childhood obesity still needs major help and it’s up to everyone to chip in and try to fix it. Stop blaming people. Next time you blame someone or hear someone blame someone else for the cause of childhood obesity, ask them what are you doing to help childhood obesity??? If they have no answer then “I REST MY CASE” Blaming others doesn't do anything but add to the problem. Let’s not add to the problem lets solve childhood obesity and make our world A BETTER WORLD.

“WALLE World or Stop Childhood Obesity”

Have you ever seen the movie “Walle”? If you haven’t it’s a perfect example of what will happen to the world and the people in it if we leave childhood Obesity as it is! This movie should be watched by parents and children because it’s funny but the message is serious and meaningful. The moral of the movie shows that we should live healthy lives, but if we don’t we will all evolve into obese people with short arms and legs and can’t move around at all. Now do any of us want this? I THINK NOT!!! Now the question is what we can do to prevent this “Walle World” from becoming a reality.
Even though this blog title is directed toward childhood obesity it’s more to it than that. As parents  we have to realize our children look up to us and do the things they see their parents doing. This means exercising, eating, certain foods, and going to bed at a certain time. Kids are very aware of all these things and as parents we have to this. What this means for us (Parents) is that we have to make time to exercise and eat healthy foods and go to be at a decent time, or at least pretend to go to bed that way our kids will go to sleep. I know parents need their alone time because sometimes kids can be a hassle, but hey you got to love them. J
By exercising and eating healthy our kids will most likely learn to love to exercise and eat healthy. Basically what is happening is we are helping our kids develop good habits that will benefit them throughout their whole life. I know it can get hard at times because we work and when we get home sometimes we are so tired all we want to do is get some Zzzzzz. Parents understand that you are not alone we are all tired raising kids and keeping them healthy can be difficult, especially when everywhere you go you see fast-food and each cash register you check out of has a candy rack right before you leave so that kids can see it and ask. I mean what young child doesn't like McDonald's  they give toys out and have a playground. When I was a kid I loved McDonald's sometimes still do, so we can’t blame the kids at all it’s the nature of kids to like fast-food and junk food. I’m not being a hypocrite and saying never take your kids to McDonald's or give them junk food. This is okay sometimes but as a parent we have to be in control and manage when and what we give our little ones to eat.

Parents look at it this way even though we may get tired and don’t feel like exercising we all need the exercise. So what you can do is “kill two birds with one stone,” by exercising your helping yours self stay fit and in shape and your also spending time with your kid making sure they are fit and healthy. Remember while you’re doing all these things you and your child are having fun and bonding. This is one of the best feelings a parent and child could have!!! So Parents let’s kill childhood obesity by exercising, eating healthy, putting our kids to bed at a decent time and have fun while doing it.

OHHHHH WAITTTT THERE IS ONE MORE ALTERNATIVE “WALLY WORLD” LOL!!!  I’m hoping no one wants to live in Walle World so parents let’s do our job and have fun doing it, STOP   CHILD HOOD OBESITY!
